In the Solvay process, carbon dioxide and ammonia are passed into a concentrated solution of sodium chloride. These include things such as urea, ammonia, nitric acid, and ammonium phosphate. It does this by activating its own cytoplasmic urease, which converts urea into carbon dioxide and ammonia .
Solvay produces more than 7 million tonnes of sodium carbonate both by the traditional Solvay ammonia process and by the refining of Trona ore. Our high quality soda ash meets customers' specifications in accordance with all applicable safety, health and environmental standards.
Solvay Process History. In 1861, after realizing the polluting impacts of the Leblanc Process, Belgian industrial chemist Ernest Solvay rediscovered and perfected Augustin Fresnel's reaction. This process recovered the ammonia in the reaction for reuse, therefore making it less detrimental to the environment.

Solvay Process ... Crude sodium chloride brine is first purified to prevent scaling of downstream process equipment and to prevent contamination of the final product. Magnesium ions are precipitated with milk of lime, Ca(OH)2, and the calcium ions are precipitated with soda ash.

Ammonia, which is also used in the process, is almost totally regenerated and recycled. The main advantage of this process is the availability of the raw materials, which can be found almost everywhere in the world and therefore allows operating production units relatively close to the market.
